Derrick Gene Benson

Derrick Gene Benson, age 56, of Fort Wayne, IN passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.  Mr. Benson was born on June 3, 1967 in Birmingham, AL to Harold Eugene Bennett and Barbara (Benson) Bassett.  He graduated from South Side High School in Fort Wayne.  Mr. Benson served his country honorably with the United States Army.  Derrick was a jack-of-all-trades and worked diligently at many different places throughout his lifetime.  He was previously employed by Fort Wayne Plastics, General Motors, Dana, and Triple Crown all in Fort Wayne.  His passion consisted of working with and on vehicles.  This led him to owning and operating a car lot for over 10 years in Fort Wayne.  He also was a grill master and enjoyed cooking food and then selling his creations locally.  Derrick was also a skilled handyman, he enjoyed utilizing his abilities to refurbish dressers,  various household items, and DIY projects.  Derrick was a member of The Destiny Dome Embassy of Cathedral of Praise in Fort Wayne.  He valued and cherished his time praising and worshiping his Lord and Saviour.  Family and precious quality time spent with loved ones was one of the Derrick’s favorite pastimes.  Derrick loved his family, friends, and will be deeply missed by those whose lives he blessed.

Grandchildren, Shaniah, Anori, Derrick, Cashden,Zayn, Wes’den, Halo, Lennox, and Braxden.

Brother, Courtney Benson of Fort Wayne, IN.

Sister, Bridgette and Matthew Mucher of Jamaica.

Sister, Carmela and Marvin Cowan of Fort Wayne, IN.  

Aunt, Eddie “Bay Bay” Benson of Fort Wayne, IN.

Derrick was preceded in death by his father, Harold Eugene Bennett, step-father, Ollie Bassett, and uncle, C.B. “Sonny” Benson.

A Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 12:00pm with visitation prior from 10:00am-12:00pm at The Destiny Dome Embassy of Cathedral of Praise, 3501 Harris Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46808.

Officiating the service will be Apostle Dr. Oscar J. Dowdell Underwood.

Burial with Military Honors will take place at Marion National Cemetery. (Schedule Pending) 

Memorial donations may be directed to the family to assist with final expenses.
