Betty Jean Reade

Betty Jean Reade, age 79, of LaGrange, IN formerly of Howe, IN passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Life Care Center of LaGrange.  Ms. Reade was born on August 12, 1944 in Kendallville, IN to Fred and Thelma (Bowman) Stienbarger.  In 2005, she married Arnold Reade Sr. in Howe, IN.  Betty was the utmost diligent worker and a Jill-Of-All-Trades.  She picked tobacco in tobacco fields, made parachutes and clothing for firefighters.  Her favorite passion that she made a career of was cooking and she was a “damn good cook!”  She cooked at Mom’s Restaurant in LaGrange and then ventured to cook for DJ’s Restaurant also in LaGrange for many years.  She also assisted and cooked at the Moose Lodge, The Eagles, and at L.A. West Express.  When Betty wasn’t working, she would enjoy relaxing while reading a book, watching action packed movies, going down every aisle while shopping and loved the silence of being alone in solitude.  Above all her family, loved ones, and grandchildren came first.  She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and soaked up every precious second with them.

Daughter, Karey Reade.

Daughter, Jeanie Farrington.

Daughter, Carol Hall.

Daughter-in-law, Cathy Reade.

Grandchildren, Timothy Reade, Tara (Kody) Vaillancourt, Cassandra (Chris) Marshall, Brittony Reade, Terry Reade (Chelsie Bolen), Kayla (Paciano) Carmona, Paige Martin, Triston Farrington, Heather Speicher, Skye Vincent, and Michael Gilson.

Several great-grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers; Fred and Alonzo Stienbarger, 1 sister, Shirley Hunter, 2 sons; Arnold Reade Jr. and Raymond Reade and 4 stillborn children, 

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 1:00pm with calling 2 hours prior from 11:00am-1:00pm at Hess Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 603 South Detroit Street, LaGrange, IN 46761.

Burial will take place at Orange Cemetery in Rome City, IN.

Memorial donations may be directed to the family for final expenses.
