Obituary

A devoted servant of God, Larry M. Strayer, age 91, of LaGrange, IN, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at Parkview LaGrange.

He was born on December 21, 1933, in Wolcottville, IN, to the late Clarence L. and Rose A. Strayer. In 1951, Larry graduated from Springfield Township School. On June 5, 1953, he married the love of his life, Shirley Jean Caldwell, at the Mongo Methodist Church. The young couple made their home on a farm in Bloomfield Township, LaGrange County, where they raised their family.

In 1954, Larry was called to serve his country during the Korean War. He served as a Field Communications Chief, stationed first in Oklahoma and later in Alaska, where he was a member of the Army's cross-country ski team. He was awarded two 200-mile patches and skied more than 500 miles during his service. After returning home, Larry was joyfully reunited with his wife, Shirley, and together they raised five of their six children.

Larry lived a life of faith, service, and compassion. He donated hundreds of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to the local Clothes and Food Basket and was honored with "The Heart of Gold" award, represented by a carved solid oak bench. He also served as minister for a rural church in Rome City, IN, and throughout his life was known by many roles collector, farmer, historian, manager, politician but above all, he was a faithful servant of God and a man devoted to his community and family.
