Frederick A. Leiter

Frederick “Fred” A. Leiter, age 94, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at Chandler Place in Kendallville, Indiana. Fred was born on April 14, 1932, in Warsaw, Indiana, to the late Everett P. Leiter and the late Suzy (Downhour) Leiter. After serving in the United States Army, Fred married Betty Jean Robinson on June 5, 1955; she predeceased him in 2012 after 57 years of marriage. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 1960 from Purdue University then worked as an electrical engineer at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, for nearly 30 years.

In addition to being dedicated to his work, Fred enjoyed the “lake life” on Oliver Lake in rural LaGrange County, Indiana. He also enjoyed being creative and “fixing things”, working on a number of do-it-yourself projects. He had even obtained a patent on a magnetically controlled switching device. But Fred especially cherished time spent with his family and being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Fred is survived by two sons, Brent (Paula) Leiter and Spencer (Jill) Leiter; one daughter, Jeannine (Ronald Siegel) Leiter; grandson, Nathan Leiter; granddaughter, Chelsea (Brian) Thompson; grandson, Shane (Megan) Leiter; granddaughter, Bailey Leiter; grandson, Clark Leiter; granddaughter, Samantha (Joe Walsh) Schwartz; and grandson, Patrick (Georgia Miller) Schwartz. Fred is also survived by four great-grandchildren: great-grandson, Connor Leiter; great-granddaughter, Hannah Leiter; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Thompson; and great-grandson, Zane Leiter. Fred is survived by three siblings: sister, Arlene Leiter; brother, Gerald (Brenda) Leiter; and brother Gale (Donna) Leiter.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Everett P. and Suzy Leiter; his wife of 57 years, Betty Jean Leiter; brother, Everett Devon Leiter; sister, Shirley Lehr; brother, Cloyce Leiter; and sister, Ellen Leiter.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in the upstairs sanctuary at Sugar Grove Church, 58512 Old County Road 17, Goshen, Indiana, 46528.
